Optimization of the Portal certification process and user experience enhancement of the WiFi certification system

The guest comes to the hotel and pops a certification page. It's technically simple.——The browser initiates HTTP requests, the gateway intercepts and redirects to Portal servers. But in practice, this process can be lost at a rate of more than 30 per cent. That is, three out of every 10 clients have given up on certification. There are network reasons, equipment compatibility issues, and authentication page design problems.

Reorientation is the first bottleneck.

The standard Portal authentication process is as follows: after the user connects WiFi, the device automatically initiates a HTTP request to detect network connectivity (such as access to captive.apple.com or connectivitycheck.gstatic.com), and the gateway intercepts this request and returns the URL of HTTP 302 directed back to the Portal certification page. There are many problems in this process: if the target URL is for HTTPS and there is no corresponding root certificate on the equipment, the page will directly display a security warning, which users will probably turn off. If the reoriented URL is HTTP, some modern browsers prevent automatic jump to the HTTP page.

The practical compromise is that the Portal server supports both HTTP and HTTPS, which are to be used in re-orientation by using the user device User-Agent. iOS equipment and the newer Android equipment give priority to HTTPs and older equipment to HTTPs.WiFi certification systemThe Portal server has the protocol self-adaptability and the compatibility of HTTPS certificates covers the root certificate bank for mainstream equipment.

There is also a frequently overlooked problem: many hotels’ WiFi networks have problems with DNS distribution before user certification. Equipment can be used to perform DNS resolution when initiating connectivity detection, and if DNS is not reached or solved over time, the entire Portal ejection process will be stuck. Technicians are usually deployed in a network environment they know well, DNS everything is normal, but the fact that the guest equipment is used by the hotel ' s own DNS or operator may be completely different. Ensuring that pre-certification DNS services are available and delayed is a prerequisite for optimizing Portal authentication.

The speed of loading the authentication page itself directly determines user patience.

The IT dimensions of hotels should have seen the data: every second that Portal has been loaded, the certification completion rate drops by about 5-8 percentage points. This is not a lab study, it's a pattern we have repeated in actual operating data on multiple hotel projects. Guests and WiFi are usually motivated directly.——They want to be online, they want to paint videos, they want to handle jobs. What they expect is that they can use them and any extra wait will turn into impatientness.

Portal pages can be loaded at a few points. One is the size of the page itself.——Do not put up a high-level map, do not introduce third party statistical scripts and ad SDKs, which will significantly slow down the first screen rendering. The design principles for authentication pages should be extremely simple: background drawings are used in compressed pictures, total page size is contained within 200 KB. Second, the response speed of Portal servers——If a Portal server is deployed on cloud ends, ensure that the CRN's cover nodes are sufficient and the return chain stabilizes; if it is locally deployed, ensure that the server's bandwidth and co-match capability support peak times. Third, while the authentication page is loaded, preloading the welcome or guide page after the certification has been successful, so that the user's backstage is already preparing the next page when entering authentication information, and the successful jumping of the authentication is not waiting.

The choice and direction of authentication methods have more than the degree of convenience.

The number of certifications common in the hotel landscape is varied: cell phone SMS, micro-scanning focus on public sign authentication, room number plus password authentication, one key authentication. The rate of completion varies widely across modes. SMS certification usually ranges from 70 to 80%, but the rate of abandonment will rise dramatically if the SMS switch is delayed or the client does not receive it. The MCS certification can be over 85% because the operation custom has been developed, provided that the WiFi authentication system and the interface with the Micro-Caution Public Platform are stabilized. The room code plus cryptographic certification is the lowest, about 60%, as guests need access to the passcode at the front desk, with certain operating costs.

From a business perspective, best practice is to provide multiple authentication combinations for clients to choose.——It's better to be by default recommending a way with the highest completion rate (e.g., one key authentication or micromail scan), highlighting it with big buttons, and folding in other ways."Other methods of authentication"In the entrance.

The error hint when authentication fails is the experience detail that is seriously underestimated.

Users have had a lot of failures in authentication: the code was wrong, text messages were out of time, accounts were tied to other devices and MAC addresses were misdirected as blacklists.……If only one of these cases"Authentication failed. Please try again."The general clue, the user has no idea where the problem is and then gives up after trying one or two.——Like what?"The authentication code is expired and re-sent. Please check the latest text message."——Users have clear routing.

It's not complicated to get this in detail, but it needs to be.WiFi certification systemThe Portal server has sent a specific error code to the corresponding user reminder case based on the error number in response to the certification failure. This certainly increases the workload of development and testing, but it is worth raising the completion rate for authentication. We have compared the actual project: hotels that optimized with detailed bug tips are about 15% more successful than generic reminders.

The network readiness time after certification has been successful is also controlled.

The client is certified and confirmed by clicking. But actually, from the authorization instructions given under the authentication system to a gateway device using the ACL policy to release access, to the full network access capability of the client's equipment, there is a time window in the middle. If this window can be controlled within 1 to 2 seconds, the user experience is smooth; if it exceeds 3 seconds, the client will start to doubt it."Didn't it work?"and then re-renew or re-validate.

Common means of reducing this window include: Authentication Gateway communication between devices using long connections instead of round queries; transmission of authorized instructions using direct push-in without a step-by-step queue; Portal pages showing dynamic first after authentication has been successful"Connecting……"Transitional animations display successful pages when the gateway is confirmed. The small details accumulate to reduce significantly the duplication of actions that users are waiting for anxiety.

The Portal certification process is not one-time, but requires continuous observation of data in operation: the ejectivity rate of the authentication page, the length of time a user stays on the authentication page, the completion rate of the various authentication methods and the distribution of the reasons for the failure. With these data, the optimisation direction is not just thought out, but rather data driven and documented. Each round of optimization can see changes in the performance curve, which itself is part of the accumulated capacity of the operations team.
