Configuration key points when hotel network audit gateway works with WiFi certification system

Many hotels buy network equipment, often the audit gateway and WiFi certification systems are purchased separately or from different suppliers.

Many hotels purchase network equipment, often separate audit gateways and WiFi certification systems from different suppliers. The two systems run together, but the effectiveness of teamwork depends on how well the configuration level details are handled. If both sides are not well configured, there is a fault in the identity information in the log, and the actual value of the audit data is significantly reduced.

The clock synchronisation is the basis for teamwork.

The audit gateway and the certification system need to record time stampes in the log. If the clocks of both systems are not synchronized, even a few minutes away, they appear when you do an identity check afterwards."No matching records found"The problem is not apparent in daily operations, and it only comes to light when historical records are checked. Both systems should be connected to the NTP time server to ensure that clocks are identical. This is not an optional configuration, but a prerequisite for teamwork.

Syslog matching format

The authentication system usually supports the transmission of authentication records to external systems through Syslog, which can be combined with the certificate log as a Syslog receiving end. This interface sounds simple but often presents problems. Syslog ' s message format does not have uniform standards and the field names, fields order and time formats for the output of different certification systems from the manufacturer are different. The resolution rules of the audit gateway need to be written according to the output format of specific authentication systems, otherwise the logs are received without valid fields being parsed out in white.

IP Completeness of the distribution record

The certification system records the residences when they pass the authentication."Some identity uses some IP"The validity of this record is related to the length of time that a DHCP address lease has been made. If the DHCP lease is set for a shorter period (e.g. 1 hour), the same IP may be assigned to multiple occupants within one day. Audit gateways need to be accurate to the time frame when they are associated with an identity, not just to see the IP, but must match the time range at the same time. When you configure audit system search rules, the logic of precise matching over this time period must test the validation rather than assume that the system's default processing is correct.

Multiple SSIDs

Hotels usually have several wireless networks: a network of tenants, a network of employees, a network of conference rooms and sometimes a dedicated network of POS machines. Unlike the SSID, traffic follows different strategic paths to access certification systems. Audit gateways need to be able to identify which SSID or VLAN flows are coming from in order to correctly distinguish between different types of user behaviour. If all traffic is mixed for auditing, there is no separation between employee and guest behavior, and much interference with information can occur when searching.

Flow processing after authentication failed

The occupants have connected to the WiFi network before passing the WiFi authentication, but have not yet completed identification. During this time period, the equipment flow is actually in the authentication network, not in the official Internet access network. Audit gateways need to be clear about this."Uncertified traffic"How to do this: whether you don't record it at all, or whether you record it but are marked as uncertified or directly blocked. Different hotels have different strategies, but the logic of handling and certification systems have an uncertified interception strategy set-up that is consistent with the boundaries between them.

The account after the guest checked out is synchronized.

Once the guest has checked out, the authentication system should cancel the resident's online account and DHCP address binding should be released. However, there are instances of delays in synchronizing between systems: the DHCP server's binding records have been cancelled but not updated in a timely manner or the audit gateway meeting records have not been closed. This is an unusual occurrence, but may occur in hotels with high occupancy rates and fast-moving rooms."A, check out. B, move in the same room.". The configuration requires a clear system account status synchronization mechanism and time delay range, which is particularly important for hotels with high liquidity requirements.

Uniform storage and query entry for logs

The certification log and traffic audit logs are best assembled into a single storage and query platform, rather than two systems each keeping their data. The unified platform allows ex post queries to be conducted only with one interface, without having to log in to two systems manually. Some audit gateways bring home the log aggregation function to support the import of records from third-party authentication systems; others require additional deployment of log servers. The planning phase should determine the final storage and search entrance to the log instead of waiting for the system to be online before it discovers a fragmentation of data between them.

Configure the connection test for change

The co-mapping between the certification system and the audit gateway is not always fixed at once. Certification system upgrades may change Syslog format, network top changes may affect IP distribution range, and VLAN adjustments may lead to error in flow attribution. Each configuration change involving either set of two systems should be validated by association, confirming that the alignment logic remains normal. This validation step can easily be omitted, especially when small versions are upgraded, but the resulting cost is only to discover that data is already wrong when it is needed for audit records.

The core of the work of both systems is the complete flow of data and the precise alignment of time series. Technology is not complicated, but the details are not being processed, which reduces the reliability of the entire audit system.
