Guide to the campus network certification system for operational deployment

The campus network certification system is only the first step, and it is a daily operation that tests its performance. There is a common understanding among all engineers who have been on campus web-wires: the certification system is not problematic; one problem is a whole school level. Three minutes before the student dormitory breaks off the net, thousands dials simultaneously, BRAS equipment CPU skyrockets to more than 90%; Portal servers were reported on the day they started their studies, and new students and parents were blocked up at the site because of excessive direct-duty machines; a cell had an open DHCP router, with over 200 IP addresses in the entire floor. These scenes are not examples of teaching materials, but rather of reality faced by transporters.

To clear the transport dimensions, start with the most common malfunctions. The first person on the complaint list is always " able to access Wi-Fi without opening a login page". Users say that the Wi-Fi icon shows connections and signals are full, but it does not pop up the Portal authentication page. This requires layered screening. First, users can manually enter a pure HTTP site in the browser address bar, such as http://1.1.1.1. Portal redirection only for HTTP requests, and if the user has opened the HTTPS page by default, redirection will be intercepted by the HTTS strategy of the browser. If HTTP is also unopenable, check the IP address and DNS obtained by the terminal. Most Portal sites require access to IPs and DNSs through DHCP, and if the user manually installs or leaves an agent, DNS deciphers the domain name of the Portal server and re-direction does not trigger it. There is also a case that can be overlooked where users shut off "Auto Login" options in Wi-Fi settings, iOS and part of Andre customized ROM with this switch, which will not be active when HTTP detection requests are turned off and Portal pages will not pop up.

The second high frequency failure is certified through a network speed but the user login was successful. Portal page shows "authentication success" but opening the web page takes more than 10 seconds. This problem is particularly common in PPPOE environments, where 89% of MTU are incompatible. The standard Ethernet MTU is 1,500 bytes and PPpoE tunnels cost 8 bytes, which actually only 1492. If the user router or terminal defaults to use 1500 MTU packages, then the package is larger than 1492 here in Bras, either split or discarded. TCP needs retransformation after sub-discrete, delay direct doubling. The solution is to start TCP MSS adjustment on BRAS, with three handshake stages of MSS clamps below 1452 so that the TCP level does not send data segments above the limit for chain carriers. In Portal, the speed problem is mostly on the session sheet for gateway devices. Each certified IP corresponds to a session table item, an old one has limited capacity and a new session cannot be created after peaking.——Ping takes the ICMP protocol without building a session, and HTTP needs to create a new TCP session. This can only be done by upgrading hardware or optimizing the meeting time.

The third problem is the sharing of private routers and accounts. Student dormitories have a home router, WAN off campus network, and all-bed rooms share an account number. This behaviour affects fair billing on one hand, while routers default to open DHCP back-to-end IP addresses for campus networks, resulting in other users on the same floor getting wrong gateway addresses and whole-of-the-line break-off. If the system detects multiple TTL values under the same account, it can be judged that routers are hanging behind them. More sophisticated is to detect diversity in HTTP User-Agent——Some systems also identify sharing behaviour in conjunction with DPI depth pack tests, such as detection of multiple instantaneous accounts under the same account.

Daily inspections are key to reducing malfunctions. RADIUS servers are the best diagnostic tool for operators. Ten minutes per day to check the certification failure log, and many problems can be detected in advance. For example, a number of consecutive validation failures on an account that is short-term, probably with a password loss or theft, prevent any subsequent trouble by freezing it in time. Syslog’s central collection and analysis should also be integrated into daily processes, with the logs of authentication systems, switchbooks and DHCP servers being analysed together for association purposes. The unusual pattern is clear. For example, an IP address conflict outbreak occurs in a building that has been privately connected to a router at a rate of 89 per cent.

Backup and escape mechanisms are the bottom line. The authentication server must be double-heated, with one machine taking over seamlessly. More importantly, the escape strategy. What if both sets up the escape strategy? In actual deployments, it is recommended that disaster preparedness exercises be conducted regularly, that the scene of all the servers' crashes be simulated and that escape strategies be validated as expected.

The security of the authentication system is a continuous process to combat anglutinous growth. The equipment is ageing, the number of users and the changes in demand are creating new problems.——That doesn't exist.——Instead, it is a mechanism that can quickly locate problems and restore services. The failure is inevitable, but the interruption time can be controlled by systems and processes. With a string of mouth lines, several commonly used RADIUS debug orders, and an offline web-tap map, these simple habits are often more critical than expensive network systems.
