Flow management of the WiFi network billing system on campus in the summer-time mode

Once the summer vacations arrive, some of our colleagues on campus network relax and feel less stressful, while others are in reverse because of poor management of the holiday flow and a concentrated outbreak after school.

The summer holidays, when they arrive, are sometimes relaxed and feel less stressful on the campus network; the other part is the opposite because the holiday flow management is not well managed, and there are a lot of problems that will arise after school. The summer vacation is not a hibernation period for the WiFi network system on campus, but it is a completely different business scene from the school year, with changes in traffic behaviour, user groups, and billing logic.

The network's user structure and duration of school is completely different.

During school hours, the main users of the campus network are students and teachers. The use of the net is regular: there is a low flow during classes, a marked peak in class and evenings, and a decline in the flow of weekends and holidays.

The structure of the population that stays in school is more complex: there are graduate and graduate students who have a paper-writing history, summer practice students, extra-school summer training camp participants, summer camps organized by the school itself, and school logistics, security, administration, etc. These groups have different needs for Internet access, as well as different ways to charge fees, and many systems do not tailor these differences before holidays.

The result is that some students who are studying abroad have their meal packages which expire at the beginning of summer holidays and that the renewal process takes the school path (e.g., relying on school card charging, but not opening a summer school card window), which is not worth, but only with mobile phone traffic. Some external trainees in summer training need temporary accounts, but there is no temporary account management in the system, and managers can create them manually. These problems are fed back into when they start school, and appear to be unincorporated, and the holiday model has not been designed.

The mismatch between fee cycles and leave

Many schools have school net packages that are paid for on a school term or monthly basis."State of arrears"The students do not know to charge the value.

There are several ways to deal with this mismatch. One is automatically extending the set through school day at the end of the school year, so that it ends and starts in alignment; so that students can use the network directly when they start school, without refilling it, and experience it well, but the system needs to be supportive."Extension of validity period"This operation, not just"Purchase of new package"The other is to suspend the billing during the holiday period, and continue to pay the remaining deductions after school starts; this is fair for students, but it is more complicated than it seems to be when the system’s suspension/restoration logic is required. There is also a direct monthly calculation that avoids the commuting of the cycle and the leave; but this way students feel that the two months of summer vacation are also being withheld, which would be worthless if used less.

No approach is perfect, and it is crucial that schools choose clearly which approach to project planning rather than find that leave processing is not taken into account when the system is online.

Summer Broadband Use Paradigm Conflict between the logic of a plan

While the number of school stays is low during summer holidays, network bandwidth is in fact often very high utilization. The reason is that summer holidays are a time window for many schools to upgrade their network equipment, move servers, and have large amounts of data back-up, and the IT Department will do a lot of internal data transfers and out-of-grid downloads during this period. In addition, some teachers and graduate students who stay in schools have more time to do research during summer vacations, and videoconferencing, large file transfer, remote access to servers is not underutilized.

If the WiFi network billing system is on a flow basis, these high bandwidth usages can cost more than expected during vacation. In particular, IT-based networks tend to consume dozens of times more of individual users, and bills are difficult to read if they follow a costing logic with ordinary students.

It is recommended that special accounts such as IT management accounts, server-specific accounts be exempted from the traffic billing or higher traffic ceilings in the system. This requires pre-labelling on account numbers and cannot wait to be filled after problems arise.

Security certification requirements during vacations cannot be reduced

One common error is that there are fewer users during vacations, certification can be relaxed and no one can use it. The idea is wrong at the level of cybersecurity and compliance.

The education industry has clear regulatory requirements for the authentication of real names on the web, whether during vacations or school hours, and the requirement to retain logs is continuous throughout the year. If the certification strategy is changed to make it easier during the holidays"Release Directly"Or..."No temporary account certified", leave a compliance risk.

This is particularly true in the summer training, summer camps, etc., where outsiders enter schools. External personnel do not have academic information, but must complete a real name certification before accessing the Internet.

Selective closing strategy for the holiday machine room and accommodation

Some schools will close APs in some buildings or reduce the launch power during holidays, keeping only a few buildings with students on their way to school.

This operation is reasonable in itself, but the relationship to the system requires attention: if a student who has been left with a residence is judged to be a building"No one stays in school."The student has no Internet access, but his package continues to be withheld (if monthly). There are well-documented complaints that this situation is happening.——Students are not connected, but it is difficult to explain that the account was withheld.

The response is to ask if the building has an active account number (recently Nday certified records) before closing AP, and that the building with an active account number remains open; or to notify the corresponding account number at closing date of need for access to a specified area; or to make fee reliefs for accounts not online during the period when AAP is shut down. These methods require connections between systems and network infrastructure, which are not covered by manual processing.

Flow shocks at the beginning of school: three days before the end of vacation

After the holidays, a large number of students are back in school, generating high and simultaneous requests for certification and peak flows within a short period of time. This shock poses a greater challenge to the WiFi network system on campus than it is at times.

The simultaneous requests for WiFi, which is connected to the dormitory and classroom areas by thousands of students on the day of school start-up, may have erupted in a few minutes. If the system does not plan its capacity, there is a high probability of timeout within this window, with large numbers of students not accessing the Internet, creating mass impairments at first hours, and security operators being overwhelmed.

The response to the start-up shock requires preparation during leave: checking the system server ' s operational status (which cannot accumulate errors until the start of the school), testing certification and processing capability, confirming whether the package configuration needs updating and completing account synchronization (initiation of newer accounts, closing off student accounts). If these work is completed two weeks before the start of the school, the risk of an opening shock can be kept within reasonable limits.

Leave security response: do not expect the manufacturer to respond fully to the leave.

The technical support team is also on holiday, the holiday-connected person may be a line of passenger service, and the technologists who are really capable of dealing with deep problems can wait until the end of the leave period to follow up.

This means that the school’s own network administrator needs to have some autonomy during the vacation period. It is recommended that a systematic training or documentation turn-on be done before summer break: what are the routine check-ups for common malfunctions, which parameters can be adjusted, and what is the temporary disposal programme in an emergency situation.

Leave management is a low-profile but actual user satisfaction component of the campus network project.
