Wireless authentication docks with AD fields.

Wireless certification of the company for AD domain or LDAP catalogue services is a standard requirement for many medium-sized and large enterprises.

Wireless certification of a business to connect to AD domain or LDAP catalogue services is the standard requirement for many medium-sized and large enterprises.——But in the actual project, this integration is problematic and many teams find certification to be impossible at mid-term. The docking effort is far more than expected. Here we will sort out common matchmaking problems and help teams that are about to start such projects to make a judgement ahead of time.

The most common first problem is that the account properties in the AD field do not match the fields expected by the authentication system. Wireless authentication systems, when doing Radius authentication, launch LDAP queries to the AD domain, matching the user-inputed account password with the account number information in the AD. The problem is that the accounting attribute naming rules vary from one area to another in the AD domain.——Some companies use a work sign, some use a prefix in the mailbox, and some people have no name fields. The authentication system usually assumes a standard AD attribute structure under default configurations, so that once an enterprise's AD field is named differently, the certification fails quietly."The account code is correct, but it's not going up.". These problems require technicians who know both wireless authentication and AD fields to locate root causes.

The second problem is compatibility between the password strategy of the AD domain and the wireless authentication protocol. The enterprise AD domain usually uses password complexity requirements, password expiry strategies, account locking policies that are not problematic when users log on Windows computers but may be unexpected in a wireless certification site. For example, some authentication systems use the EPA-PEAP agreement, but PEAP protocols require users to re-enter old passwords to confirm new passwords when they process code expiration, which cannot be done on the wireless certified Portal page, with the result that the expired password account cannot change passwords at the time of wireless authentication and users are completely unaware that they have been locked. This issue requires that the boundary conditions of the password strategy be clearly defined at the system design stage, and that pre-planned password maturities alerts and self-help modification corridors be planned.

The third problem is multi-area and forest trust environment. Many large and medium-sized enterprises have AD structures that are not single domains, but multi-domain, multiforestry structures or multiple subsidiaries that manage their own AD domain. In this environment, wireless certification systems can technically achieve how they handle the authentication requests of a domain, cross-domain user, and how these issues are inherited. The screening cycle for such issues is usually long, as it involves multiple coordination involving AD domain managers, network security teams and wireless vendor technical support.

The fourth category is the service end-performance of Wireless Certification Systems and the load balance of AD domain controllers.——On average, there are two to three wireless terminals per employee, plus visitors and Iot equipment, the simultaneous distribution of Wireless authentication requests may be several times as large as the design capacity in the AD domain. If only one or two AD domain controllers do not have load balances, Wireless certification peaks will result in an overtime certified or even a non-response of AD area control. This problem is completely undetected during low-peak tests, and it will only be exposed during full-time peak hours. It is recommended that the current load and authentication request capacity of AD domain controllers be assessed prior to docking with the AD domain control, and that a layer of Radius proxy server between wireless certification systems and AD domains be added if necessary to buffer and distribute authentication requests to avoid direct impact on AD domain controllers.

The fifth category is compatibility of user terminals. A significant proportion of old equipment in the enterprise network is still using older operating systems, such as Windows 7 or earlier. These equipments do not support 802.1X and EPA protocols consistently, and some equipment has compatibility problems under a specific authentication method, which can be connected but are slow to certify, or often slips off after certification. The solution is to conduct a round of terminal compatibility tests at the programme design stage, to validate all active equipment models and operating system versions on a case-by-case basis, to produce compatible matrix documents, to plan alternatives for incompatible equipment in advance or to bind them manually.

There is another problem about single-point login. Many companies expect that the WiFi account of their employees will be connected directly to the WiFi, without having to lose a password again. Technically this can be done by combining 802.1X with computer accounts or user certificates, but it is very cumbersome and multi-brand equipment will be achieved differently.——Windows, macos, ios, and Android have different configuration methods. If the enterprise has more types of equipment and more complex ones, the cost of implementing a single-point login programme is high and later wiring is complicated.

The AD domain docking is not a simple task that can be used to buy a wireless authentication device. It requires advance confirmation of whether the AD attribute structure is standard, whether there are treatment options for password strategic boundaries, whether multi-domain architecture is supported, if the AD controller capacity is sufficient, whether terminal compatibility has been validated, and whether single point login is really necessary.
